Seventh Generation has been an alternative leading brand for those looking to get away from companies like Tide, Gain, or Purex. As of recent, some ingredients within Seventh Generation’s detergents have been called into question. The list of ingredients in their detergents are different depending on the scent and/or claims, so it is important to take a look at each detergent and do research individually. One time I heard the best advice, “If you don’t know how to say it then it’s probably not good for you.” Sadly, I have seen this to be true too many times throughout my search for good, eco-friendly products. Seventh Generation is one of those company’s that hasn’t lived up to their promises.

A main ingredient in many of their detergents is “benzisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone  (synthetic preservatives).” It’s hard to believe those are even words, but they are, and it is in many Seventh Generation laundry detergents, including their natural baby detergents that are supposedly made for sensitive skin.

This ingredient has been linked to high toxicity rates, skin irritation, and allergy concerns as well. So, naturally, it doesn’t make sense as to why they claim their baby detergents are for sensitive skin when ingredients within their detergent are linked to skin irritation and allergy concerns according to ewg.org.

EWG is a website dedicated to helping consumers understand the ingredients that are in the products they are buying. “Know your environment. Protect your health,” is their motto.  It’s a trustworthy, reliable source that uncovers the nitty gritty to make sure everyone is aware of what they are buying. They explain the ingredients and share what concerns, if any, have arisen from the ingredients instead of just reading the promises and claims the company makes through marketing and labels on their products.

While sifting through the Seventh Generation laundry detergents on EWG’s page, EWG has stated that there is a moderate concern about the effect many of their products have on the environment. The main reason being that many of the ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, along with benzisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone have been linked to aquatic toxicity.

Why does aquatic toxicity matter?

“Water leaving our homes generally goes either into a septic tank in the backyard where it seeps back into the ground or is sent to a sewage-treatment plant through a sewer system.” Regardless of whether or not the water is actually cleaned through the sewage-treatment center, the risk is too big to let ingredients in our laundry like sodium lauryl sulfate have a huge effect on our environment. If the water goes into a septic tank that seeps the water back into the ground then we’re definitely doomed.

These ingredients should not be in a product that is supposed clean our clothes, yet would successfully affect our personal health and the health of the environment.

It’s always a sad day when a company that claims they have good ingredients and are looking out for the health of everyone and everything turns out to be not so honest. As consumers, we need to start taking our job seriously too and not just believing every label or good marketing tool. I highly recommend using EWG to further look into the products you use in your home. They have made it easy for us not to support brands like Seventh Generation that are making false promises.

With that being said, I have some good news. I was recently made aware of a company called MyGreenFills.

This company brings you chemical free laundry detergent and protects your home from dangerous toxins that have a big impact on our planet. The best part is that it is affordable AND lives up to its promises.
