Everyone wants to have a nice smile right? to have those pearly white teeth and to know that you won’t need to go to the dentist and be in excruciating pain because you took care of your teeth is always a great reason to brush more often too. Keeping your teeth healthy is important, and what you brush your teeth with (brush and toothpaste) is important as well.

Last year I lived in Costa Rica, and one of the interesting things I noticed about the beach town that I lived in was that every once in a while after a storm or the hight tide the beaches would be absolutely scattered with toothbrushes. Plastic toothbrushes of every color. You couldn’t walk a few feet without another toothbrush (or another piece of plastic) that had washed up on the beach.

The interesting thing about this is that some days the beach was perfectly clear and free of trash for the most part, but then other days when the tide changed or there was a storm it was like the ocean was regurgitating it’s plastic onto the beautiful shores.

This struck me as crazy for a few reasons. One question I had was “How do all of these toothbrushes get into the ocean in the first place?” Honestly? I have no idea. People are obviously the cause of it though, I don’t think that there are any animals or wildlife brushing their teeth and littering the ocean with their used toothbrush.

While living in Costa Rica, I saw the firsthand effects of our actions, of the choices our products make. Seeing this left a big impact on me, part of that impact realizing that we need to change in the products we consume and we need to be greener and more sustainable.

Thankfully there are people like Rohit Kumar, founder of BrushWithBamboo.com who are creating products, in this case toothbrushes that are made of bamboo instead of plastic. What a brilliant idea right? Not only is this toothbrush from BrushWithBamboo.com plastic free and made of bamboo but the bristles on the brush are BPA free as well. BPA is a toxic chemical found in plastics that you probably brush your teeth with everyday unknowingly.

The other benefit to bamboo is that bamboo in the wild is very anti-microbrial, anti-bacterial basically. Many plants in the wild develop strong anti-bacterial properties in order to survive and thrive so products that use these plants can benefit from those properties as well.   In fact, if you look up bamboo textiles in google you will find that bamboo bedsheets are some of the best ‘germ killing’ bedsheets.

So if you brush your teeth with a plastic toothbrush that contains BPA (a toxin, possibly carcinogen) each day don’t you think it would be better to make a small change to improve your health and the planet? That’s where these brush with bamboo toothbrushes come in.  I believe that small changes in the way we operate on a daily basis (like this) changes the world around us.

I recently got my toothbrushes and tried them out and absolutely loved them.  If you are looking for a way to improve your planet and your health at the same time this is definitely something worth getting!

The other aspects of this product and company that I really love are that the wrapper and packaging is recycled and biodegradable.  That means that if you bought this product and put it in the soil it would compost and breakdown much faster than any other toothbrushes or packaging out there.  This brush and company is truly doing things the right way! so vote with your dollars and support them.

Also bamboo is one of the fastest growing and most renewable sources on the planet so for us to use bamboo to create more products as opposed to other woods, or plastic it makes a lot of sense.  Bamboo can grow up to 3-4 feet a day! Take a look at the image on the left above to see the sustainable process that you can be a part of when you brush with bamboo today.
