If you’ve been on an organic living journey for a while now there’s no doubt that there’s a few things that you may miss from your ‘old life’ that you just don’t get anymore. Whether it’s a snack, treat or drink, it sucks not having something that you used to enjoy. The great thing about healthy eating and living is that you don’t need to give up what you love 100%. You can simply replace the junk food version of something with a higher quality alternative.

You may enjoy a snack or treat but it contains a lot of sugar or GMO foods. You can take a look at the ingredients and simply make an organic version of that product that is of a much higher quality. It may not be as sweet because it won’t contain as much sugar but you can still make something delicious.

Sweet Baby Ray’s is one of the most popular barbecue sauces in America. If you’ve ever had it you’ll know why, it’s quite delicious. Unfortunately it contains high levels of sugar and GMO’s as well. You can see the ingredient list here:

High Fructose Corn Syrup, Vinegar, Tomato Paste, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Natural Smoke Flavor, Spices, Caramel, Sodium Benzoate As A Preservative, Molasses, Corn Syrup, Garlic, Sugar, Tamarind, Natural Flavor.

The most prevalent ingredient (#1) is High Fructose Corn Syrup, as you can see above. It also contains preservatives and corn syrup which is also from GMO corn. It’s high in both sugar and GMO content. It’s not a healthy barbecue sauce at all. It has a great flavor though. Thankfully I found an amazing replacement recipe to give you a similar flavor without the GMO ingredients, HFCS or preservatives.

Here it is:

Ingredients You’ll Need:

1¼ cups organic ketchup (Or you can make your own here)
1 cup dark brown sugar – Substitute organic coconut sugar & use less if possible
¼ cup organic molasses
¼ cup pineapple juice or apple cider vinegar
¼ cup purified water
2½ teaspoons ground mustard
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼-1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1½ teaspoons salt – Himalayan pink sea salt
1 teaspoon pepper

How To Prepare:

Step 1: Combine all the ingredients in a medium size sauce pot.

Step 2: Bring to a boil and reduce and simmer for five minutes or until all the sugar has dissolved.

Step 3: Serve immediately or cover and store in fridge.

You can use this recipe on any foods that you would use barbecue sauce on to add that delicious barbecue flavor without feeling guilty knowing that you’re consuming a GMO food or too much sugar. You can also change this recipe up a bit and remove or reduce the sugar completely to have a healthier recipe overall.
