If you Google search “Secret to Longevity” 17, 200,000 results will pop up in a matter of 0.54 seconds. At the end of it all, no pun intended, living a long, happy life is a desire deeply embedded within. In college, I was taught to never assume that someone feels the same way I do, but I have never heard anyone say how much fun heartbreak and misery is. So, I will continue assuming we all want to live a long, happy life.
There was a video shared on Zoomin.TV of a man named Suliman who lives in Lebanon. It has been said that he is 125 years old and has a 7-year-old biological son. In the video, they said that he walks over two miles a day and cuts the wood at home. “If my wife is not home, I cook, I fry, and I prepare food for the children. I am both a woman and a man!”
A shocking fact is that Suliman has been smoking for 80 years, yet he has still outlived everyone who was born in the same generation as him. The Zoomin.TV producers asked him what his secret was, his response was his “magic tea.” His magic tea consists of carob, thyme, quinoa, and anise. The “mixture can bring a dead person to life, with God’s will,” Suliman said.
A closer look at the four ingredients:
Carob:
- It is commonly used as an alternative to chocolate
- It is full of antioxidants
- Wonderful source of fiber
- Low amounts of sugar and caffeine
- It’s gluten-free
- History links carob to singers who would take it to maintain healthy vocal cords
Where does it come from and how does it grow?
“Ancient Greeks were the first to grow carob trees. Each carob tree is a single-sex, so it takes a male and female tree to produce carob pods. A single male tree can pollinate up to 20 female trees. After six or seven years, a carob tree is able to produce pods. Once a female carob tree is fertilized, it produces hundreds of pounds of dark brown pods filled with brown pulp and tiny seeds. The pods are about 1/2 to 1 foot in length and about an inch wide.”

Thyme:

- Lowers blood pressure and cholesterol
- Embodies mood-boosting effects
- May help fight cancer
- Healthy doses of Vitamin A and C
- Helps with arthritis, parasites, and skin disorders
Where does it come from and how does it grow?
“Thyme is an herb that belongs to the mint family and originated in the southern Mediterranean.” It grows up from the ground and can be planted in a garden, walkway, or even in containers, but this plant does best when it is able to be in full sun.

- Aids in weight loss
Where does it come from and how does it grow?
Quinoa thrives in cooler weather and originated from the Andes in South America. It is “harvested from tall green plants. While the plant’s sprouts are slow-growing at first, it eventually shoots up to and beyond three feet.”

Anise:

- Regulates menstruation
Where does it come from and how does it grow?
Anise is found in ancient Egypt. There is proof of its growth dating all the way back to 2000 BC. “The herbaceous anise plant is a member of the carrot family that matures to heights around three feet. Slim, spindle-shaped roots create grooved stems and leaves which form feathery lobes. In July and August, the plant produces umbels of petite white or yellow flowers having a gently sweet fragrance. At the end of August to September, the plant provides little brown seeds referred to as “Anise” also called Aniseed.”

These four ingredients that Suliman makes tea out of every day have multiple things in common like helping to fight skin disease, antioxidants, rich sources of fiber, and helps maintain a healthy voice. The benefits of just these four things speak firsthand to the quality of life they can bring. It makes sense as to why he believes this mixture can bring a dead person to life!
Suliman has a son that is only seven. He is able to play with him and help around the house daily. At 125, it’s mesmerizing to believe that someone can be that age and still have life and a son who is so young. Maybe by incorporating one or all of the ingredients he makes tea out of, we might be able to be present a little longer with loved ones. It’s worth a shot, especially when time is the most precious resource one can have. We must use it wisely. So here’s to Suliman who lives in Lebanon.
