Coconut oil is extremely beneficial for health and well-being. Whether you’re taking a spoonful a day to improve your metabolism and boost immunity, or using it topically as an agent to keep your skin healthy and moisturized it works wonders. Another way to use coconut oil is to make a natural toothpaste from it. It’s one of the best natural raw ingredients that you can use for teeth and oral health.

In fact, researchers across the board have found that coconut oil effectively kills bacteria in the mouth as well as helps kill candida (yeast infection) as well. Not only that but coconut oil is great at killing the bad bacteria that lingers and causes bad breath. So if you want to keep your mouth and teeth healthy, coconut oil would be a wise choice.

This is why people use coconut oil in what’s known as oil pulling. What is oil pulling? Oil pulling is simply taking a spoonful of coconut oil and swishing it around your mouth for several minutes to allow it to kill bad bacteria and improve oral health. This can prevent candida, kill bacteria and improve bad breath. Coconut oil is a strong anti-microbial agent.

This recipe uses 3 (or 4) ingredients.

Coconut oil, baking soda, peppermint and clove oil. Each of these ingredients have their own specific benefits. Coconut oil works to kill bacteria, yeast infections and bad breath. Baking soda works as a strong exfoliant for the teeth and gums. Peppermint is great for keeping fresh breath and increasing circulation in the gums as well as preventing cavities. Clove oil is great if you have any toothaches or tooth pain of any kind.

Together all of these ingredients kill bad bacteria, yeast that could lead to a yeast infection, improves breath, reduces risk of cavity and keeps the mouth and teeth whiter, stronger and healthier.

Natural DIY Coconut Oil & Peppermint Tooth Paste Recipe:

Here’s what you’ll need:

You just want to make sure that the coconut oil is melted down so that it can be mixed properly. After the coconut oil is liquified you’ll simply add the baking soda along with the peppermint and clove essential oil, one oil or both essential oils.  After you mix these ingredients store in a glass jar and keep in your bathroom for use!

This recipe is simple, effective and all natural. It can be used without the baking soda s well for a less abrasive toothpaste that polishes the teeth more.

As with any essential oil determining a high quality brand to use is important especially since you’re putting it in your mouth. I recommend choosing doterra essential oils and picking up a clove and peppermint oil to have on hand for this recipe. Peppermint oil can also be used to improve breathing and circulation, its great for the cough, cold, congestion and it works great in the bath also. I also recommend checking out Brush with Bamboo toothbrushes and getting a bamboo toothbrush instead of a plastic one. Why? It’s not healthy to suck on plastic everyday. Plastic contains BPA (bisphenol A) along with multiple other petroleum derived chemicals. Using bamboo is healthier and better for the planet!
